When the drive is running you can feel it moving. If it doesn't ever sleep, unplug it. If it sleeps alot, then I don't see the harm in leaving it plugged in. After all, it is a regular hard drive in an enclosure which can handle thousands of hours of use. I do still agree with err0r on the amount of usage justifying the connectivity.
