Microsoft last night issued a temporary fix for a zero-day bug affecting its Internet Explorer browser, and promised to roll out a more permanent solution via Windows Update on Friday.

The Fix It is now available via Microsoft's Support website. Scroll down and click the "Fix this problem" button under "Enable." Microsoft said it will not affect Web browsing and can be installed without a reboot.

Microsoft first issued a warning about the glitch on Monday. The software giant said last night that the IE bug "affected a small number of customers, [but] the potential exists, however, that more customers could be affected."

The problem affects IE 6-9, and computers running Windows XP, Vista, and 7. As PCMag's Security Watch blog noted this week, computers can be infected simply by visiting a website that contains malicious code.

Starting tomorrow, Microsoft will "release a cumulative update for Internet Explorer through Windows Update and our other standard distribution channels," the company said. "We recommend that you install this update as soon as it is available. If you have automatic updates enabled on our PC, you won't need to take any action â€" it will automatically be updated on your machine. This will not only reinforce the issue that the Fix It addressed, but cover other issues as well."

The fix will be released "as close to" 10 a.m. Pacific as possible, Microsoft said. The company will then host a webcast at noon Pacific to answer questions about the vulnerability.

The glitch has prompted some experts - and government officials - to caution users against using IE until the problem is solved.
