  1. Nope, hadn't heard that before. I prefer this geeky startup sound: nod_startup.wav
  2. I just received this from ebay today: eBay was built on a simple idea - that we could empower people by building a global trading platform where practically anyone could buy or sell practically anything. But that idea is now under threat from certain brand owners and manufacturers who are trying to turn back the clock and block the sale of their products on online marketplaces and other websites across the EU. Ultimately, what is at stake is the right of sellers to compete fairly in the wider online marketplace, and the right of buyers to be able to access the best possible deals from the widest possible selection of goods. Some of these brand owners argue that their objective is to prevent the sale of counterfeits on eBay. But, thanks to our work with 31,000 other rights owners, only 0.15% of listings last year were detected or reported as potentially counterfeit. The real aim of these brands is to block the sale of all their products on our site - regardless of whether such items are new or second-hand, genuine or fake. It's not just luxury items that are affected, but also everyday items like children's toys, electronic equipment, lawnmowers and pushchairs. And if we want to prevent other brand owners from following suit, we need to act now. We are therefore calling on European policymakers to amend EU competition law to stop these unfair trade practices. But we need your help to persuade them to take action. If you would like to join our campaign against online trade barriers, please sign our petition. If you're a member of ebay you should've received the e-mail containing the link to the petition. You also should have signed the petition to keep ebay going
  3. 20Mb line so it's pretty accurate.
  4. Don't bother with Firefox - just stick to IE8 or use Opera
  5. The logical thing to do is to have a checkbox for "Install Internet Explorer browser" checked by default when you're going through the initial setup, thus not forcing you to install. Gotta love a loophole True, you wouldn't have a browser if you uncheck it but that's not Microsoft's fault; unchecking that checkbox just leaves you with a shortcut on the desktop for downloading & installing their browser through Windows Update That being the logical choice IMO...
  6. Sometimes I think the intelligence of some people on this forum is artificial.... <--- Expecially that guy. I'm painting a Games Workshop model for Inquisitor, a GW roleplaying game. Blimmin' hard model to paint for a novice.
  7. Yep, sleep is "standby". S3 sleep works as you've seen. Earlier versions of sleep just put your PC in a low-power mode and "turn off" your monitor, without looking like your PC's actually off. The disbenefit is that if your PC looses power whilst on standby it will loose your session. This doesn't apply to hibernate, which takes longer to resume your session.
  8. I'm with Ozzy. turn it off or do what I do - put it to sleep. That way it takes a few seconds to resume what you were doing.
  9. Opera, king of browsers. I initially used Internet Explorer because I knew it. I later went on to use Firefox because I liked having tabbed browsing. After about 2002, I stopped using FF and went back to IE and, soon after, Maxthon as it had the benefits of FF. I occasionally used FF when I wanted a different set of cookies. I used Maxthon for ages before I discovered Opera was no longer ugly and gained a reputation for itself. the keyword search feature was (and still is) absolutely fantastic and the speed is (as far as I know) still the best. It has many other built-in features that I like so I'm sticking to it. I've tried out Safari, FF3 and I won't touch Chrome. So yeah, I've tried out all the major browsers - IE still being the one I've used most over the years but I'm now settled on Opera both at home and at work as my default browser.
  10. If you play it on your PC you can change your region a set number of times unless you have a region-free DVD player (you'll need to hunt well for one) or have a disc program such as Slysoft's AnyDVD. Actual DVD players I haven't used other than Region 2 DVDs so I can't help there.
  11. Why do you have 4 nicknames simultaneously in the same chatroom?
  12. That doesn't really work well coming from a person you already know. The chances of a long-time member of TG posting a hazardous site without it being deleted...?
  13. Wouldn't it be more logical to fix the problem after the problem occurs? I.e.: Install Roxio then tweak Windows to login automatically.
  14. Go to Start > Run > type: control userpasswords2 > press enter/ok > clear checkbox for "users must enter a password" > enter password of your account (if applicable or leave blank if you don't have one and it prompts you to enter a password) > ok everything Don't know why Roxio would enforce that policy. If you're sure you haven't installed anything else (including Windows Updates) then I don't know why that would occur. The above commands will let you log straight into Windows again.
  15. At work we require XP on our machines because the call handling applications don't work with Vista (tried & tested). Instead of relying on Dell to have roll-backs to XP our computers are shipped in third-party where they send us the machines with a duplicated hard drive. They also sort out the warranty so we don't have to go through Dell for that either. It's ben pretty handy.
  16. In order I'd recommend: Virgin Media because of their bandwidth capabilties and up-time. If that's not possible then as a last-ditch I'd say Sky Broadband or BT as they have a good reliability (ie: up-time) and come with a "free" wireless router. Oh, and I use Opera at home and at work
  17. Can I have a 1TB storage allowance for this thread?
  18. If it's modifying a system file (eg: a %systemroot%\system32 file) then you'll need to restart your computer. Also, because the built-in feature for updating the registry (which has to be manually run) doesn't immediately update everything changed in the registry it requires a reboot for those too. Oh and system components, most of those need a restart too. If you don't restart after updating, your PC's more liable to crashing and whatever security hole(s) Windows Update just patched will be there. The most annoying part about Windows Update for XP was that if you select anything other than the option to stop it from checking for and downloading updates it will do it for you and restart your PC, usually when you've left it on and gone to bed (or just AFK for a few hours) while your PC's doing something.
  19. Our website-blocking firewall isn't even implemented yet! 12 years without Internet restrictions and counting... For "research purposes" no websites will be blocked for admin staff but anyone not in admin will either have standard block sites (ie: forums, chatrooms, facebook alternatives, etc) whilst agents will likely only have access to sites that they need.
  20. A few times since I started working for my current employer I've seen "Keyboard failure. Press F1 to continue" on PCs that don't have a keyboard plugged in.
  21. Looks like a wallpaper from Shadowness. Am I right or is it just a similar style?
