At&t Named Worst Major Cellphone Carrier Again

AT&T has been named the worst-rated major cellphone carrier in the U.S. for the second year in a row, according to a new study. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless nabbed the top spot once again.

Consumer Reports Ratings conducted the survey from about 63,000 subscribers based on voice, data and customer service. The report revealed consumer sentiment about the four major cellphone carriers is virtually unchanged from the year before.

Verizon received the best scores for voice and data service quality, as well as for support attributes such as staff knowledge and resolution of issues. In contrast, Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T were given average to low marks, especially in the voice and text service quality categories.

Even though Verizon was ranked first among the major companies, smaller carriers such as Consumer Cellular, which uses AT&T’s network, and Credo, which uses Sprint’s network, surpassed the big players.

The top-ranked carriers overall are Consumer Cellular (No. 1), U.S. Cellular (No. 2), Credo Mobile (No. 3), Verizon Wireless (No. 4), Sprint (No. 5), T-Mobile (No. 6) and AT&T (No. 7).

Although AT&T was ranked last, the carrier’s 4G LTE network was rated the best as users with the service reported fewer problems.

“AT&T is still in the cellar, but with a not-so-insignificant silver lining this year,” a Consumer Reports spokesperson said. “It turns out that they have the best 4G network — that is to say, it’s the one that drew the least amount of complaints in our survey.”
