Microsoft on Tuesday unveiled a new wireless Xbox 360 controller, which features a new D-pad that transforms from a plus to a disc.


The new controller will only be available bundled with the Play and Charge Kit starting Nov. 9 for $64.99. It will replace the existing controller available in the kit.


Other new features include: A,B, X, and Y buttons that are gray instead of the standard red, green, yellow, and blue; a concave design on the analog sticks; and a matte silver color.


The new D-pad was developed amidst user complaints.


"We've heard from the community that you're not big fans of the D-pad, so the engineers went back into the laboratory and came up with this ingenious solution," Larry Hryb, Xbox Live programming director, said in a video demo. "It is a revolutionary D-pad that transforms from a disc into a plus with the twist of a hand."

The "plus" format, therefore, can be used for cardinal directional moves, while the "disc" format is intended for sweeping moves, Microsoft said.

Hryb said Microsoft has since patented this new D-pad technology.

The controller includes 2.4-GHz wireless technology with a 30-foot range. The bundle includes the play and charge cable for up to 35 hours of game play per charge. Up to four controllers can be used simultaneously with one console.

The controller is expected to be released in Europe sometime in February, Hryb said.

Those attending PAX Prime in Seattle this weekend can stop by the Microsoft booth to check out the new controllers, Hryb said.
